Hi folks! My name is Ray M. Owen and I'm a Production Sound Mixer / Location Sound Recordist.
By some estimates, the audio track contributes 50% to 75+% of the movie viewing experience. Therefore, Great Audio is just as important as Great Picture. I'll do everything within my power to get Great Audio, and that will prevent costly problems in Post.
What does a Mixer / Recordist do? The short answer is:
He/She is ultimately responsible for collecting (recording):
- all dialog (words spoken during a movie) and
- all sound effects (sounds made by objects in the movie, such as a floorboard creaking as an actor walks on it)
during principle photography (the time when the film is being shot).
In addition, He/She will, as required, also collect:
- wildtracks (dialog spoken without a camera) and
- off set sound effects,
as necessary, to aid the editors. These may be collected at any time before, during or after principle photography.
He/She is in charge of the Sound Crew, typically consisting of one or two Boom Operators and one or two Utility Sound Technicians.
